 With the introduction of Windows 11, Microsoft's new system requirements posed challenges for many users, hindering their ability to update to the new OS. As we move into 2024, Microsoft continues to refine and adjust the requirements for successive versions of Windows 11, further limiting accessibility. In line with this trend, the upcoming release of Windows 11 24 H2, expected in late 2024, introduces a new requirement: processors lacking support for the SSE 4.2 instruction set will be unable to boot Windows 11. The new requirement for Windows 11 24 H2, as identified by Bob Pony, marks a significant shift from previous limitations like the POPCNT instruction set. While earlier only the POPCNT instruction set was required for booting Windows 11, the upcoming version 24 H2 mandates support for the entire SSE 4.2 instruction set. This change underscores the importance of processor compatibility for users planning to upgrade to Windows 11 24 H2.

SSE 4.2, known as Streaming SIMD Extensions CPU instruction set, boosts performance in mathematical and multimedia tasks by executing simultaneous operations on two operands.

Since SSE 4.2 was introduced in 2008 for Intel chips and in 2011 for AMD chips, users who installed Windows 11 through official channels likely won't face compatibility issues. However, this requirement marks the end of support for modders and users running Windows 11 on older systems, as there is currently no workaround available.


How to Determine if Your System Meets Compatibility Requirements for Windows 11?

As previously noted, this prerequisite is unlikely to affect the majority of Windows 11 users. Nevertheless, if you've installed the operating system on older processors, such as AMD's Barcelona chips, it's advisable to assess compatibility using Bob Pony's testing application. Here's how:
